Couples often ask me the same question:
"What does a wedding photographer do on the wedding day and why it is so expensive?"
So I decided to write a small article about it.
Experts rightly believe that modern wedding photography requires high professional skills and big experience. That’s why top wedding photographers cost so much just for one work day.
Price for the wedding photographer can range from 700 to 10,000 dollars for one photo shoot per day. And this is a fair price, considering all the skills that every wedding photographer should have. First of all, the wedding photographer has to properly prepare for the days event by running a checklist for such things as equipment for the job. A professional usually arrives with 2-3 cameras, on camera flash units, portable studio strobe lights or reflectors and a massive amount of batteries that all need to be fully charged. He / She may need to make several hundred portraits, some of which have to be highly artistic. In this case it will be images that need to be done quickly, in shooting mode with a constantly changing view of lighting.
A professional photographer also needs to have a grasp on a strict timeline for the day and be able to function under those strict conditions. A top line wedding photographer will set a schedule for the formal portraits and will work with the wedding party to adhere to the schedule. The photographer must arrange the group and family portraits as well as portraits of the bride and groom in a timely manner. These are some of the most important images of your wedding day and if left to an inexperienced or timid photographer they will be lost forever. Many "newbie" photographers adopt the photojournalistic approach that requires NO INTERACTION with the wedding party. They are just a fly on the wall and record images in a candid style. Most people that hire photographers with a strictly photojournalistic style are disappointed when they judge the images as a whole.
Much of the work of a professional wedding photographer happens the day after the wedding when images begin the editing process. A competent photographer will always open each image in Photoshop and make necessary adjustments to optimize the photograph. Contrary to common belief, images exposed with even the best cameras are not perfect right out of the cameras. Most need some sort of TLC before the presentation to the clients.
Hope that helps you understand what a wedding photographer does on the wedding day.
